The comparison between Feroze Gandhi and Robert Vadra was lucid, thoughtful and educative (“A lesson in propriety, from one Nehru-Gandhi son-in-law,” Oct. 22). It is quite true that we cannot compare chalk and cheese but it is inevitable in the case of the two sons-in-law. One son-in-law was quite prominent in the Congress and had no fear in exposing scandals in the government headed by his father-in-law. But the other son-in-law has used his connections and brought disrepute to the first family of India.

The article is a much needed pointer to the present generation and a reminder of the old times. It also shows the contrast between the rulers of the past and present. Whereas Nehru took immediate actions on Feroze Gandhi’s exposés, the present day rulers just sleep over the issues.

Feroze, an outspoken member of the Congress, exhibited his probity in public life by exposing the Mundra scandal that saw the exit of the then powerful Finance Minister. He never exploited his family background for personal gains. Today, the overall political culture has changed. The growing nexus between corporates and the ruling party has emboldened persons like Mr. Vadra to make the best use of available opportunities.
