The Cabinet decision to clear the Constitution Amendment Bill on Goods and Services Tax (Dec.18) is bound to transform the country’s economy, boosting efforts to make India a business-friendly destination. The end of the current complex taxation regime will ultimately benefit the consumer. But much will depend on the final tax rate decided by the government. However, it is still far from the ideal GST as it excludes petroleum products and alcohol. The challenge ahead lies in passing it in both Houses of Parliament. One hopes the Opposition would support the government on this crucial piece of legislation.
