Despite repeated attacks on CRPF personnel in naxalite-affected areas, one fails to understand why the government has failed to take into account the well-being of security personnel (“ >Monitoring the situation in Chhattisgarh ,” Dec. 3). There may be sophisticated and advanced equipment and communication facilities to tackle the extremists, but of what use are these if their basic needs are not looked after? If the State government is unable to tackle the situation, why not consult the Central government and the Army? Why not use the services of those senior IPS officers who are well-versed in tackling extremist violence? Unless drastic steps are taken, security forces personnel will continue to lose their lives for no fault of theirs.

The conditions in which our commandos operate and live are deplorable. It is certainly the duty of the state to provide them with the basic needs. How can we be so nonchalant about those who are fighting for the country? Why can’t there be a full-fledged Army operation to flush out the Maoists? It will save precious lives and also pave the way for developmental activities.

Nothing can be grimmer than what has been said in the piece. The right and the first place for this article should be on the desk of the Prime Minister. The write-up must be treated as an SOS for internal security management before things get out of hand.
