‘It was given to Britain’

The Kohinoor diamond is a treasure of India and must be brought back at any cost (“ >Kohinoor given away voluntarily to British: Govt. ”, April 19). It is a symbol of our honour, prestige and history.

The fact is that the British squandered the wealth of all the nations that they colonised. The argument that the diamond was given to cover the expenses of the Anglo-Sikh wars is unacceptable. In fact, the British need to apologise for many of the historical atrocities done to us and the problems we face today.

British acceptance of the Kohinoor diamond as being of “Indian origin” is itself a big recognition. So whether the diamond was “voluntarily gifted” by us or taken away “forcibly” by them should not be a matter of discussion. Instead of showing the British in bad light, why can’t we acknowledge their good work during their rule in India in enabling infrastructure such as the railways and also their laying the foundation in the field of education and the imposition of discipline?
