Generic medicines

Many a doctor prescribes branded medicines without suggesting alternative generic medicines, which pharmacies have no incentive in selling either as they enjoy a healthy margin by selling branded drugs. If the government wants to achieve its goal, it might want to educate consumers on generics so that they are more knowledgeable.

The government’s flagship programme of having more Jan Aushadhi outlets is laudable, but forcing a doctor to prescribe generic drugs is like exercising authority over one’s personal decision. Instead, there should be a public database of branded medicines and their generic equivalents.
