Free but not equal

It was inspiring to read noted American civil rights activist Jesse Jackson complimenting India for “exporting brains” and mentioning that “India’s number one products are strong minds in the scientific field that can make a contribution to saving India and the world.” His pointing out “the unfinished business of the Indian liberation struggle” being freedom from poverty is a poignant reminder of the distance we have to cover. Development means nothing if it does not exterminate the menace of social and economic inequality.
