Foreign varsities

This has reference to the article on Foreign Universities Bill — 2010 (Open Page, Aug. 1). Quality depends a lot on many factors which cannot be manufactured overnight. They are a result of an arduous research process. Would it not be ironical to bring in foreign universities and let the Indian universities compete with them? Are we doing so in other spheres, say administration and governance, to improve quality? If competition alone ensures quality, how many regional educational institutions in India have stood up to the Indian Institute of Science, the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institutes of Management? Proliferation of foreign educational providers will only lead to unhealthy competition. They may, at best, serve the needs of a small section of society.
