We must face the bitter truth that the judicial system in India has changed (“ >Fair advocacy as a right ,” March 27). It is not uncommon to hear of cases being resolved after the professional lawyer is paid the right fees. As far as the aam aadmi is concerned, it is a near-impossibility to get fair justice. One hopes the Bar Council pays attention to this.

I would like to quote what Mr. Soli Sorabjee said in the context of high legal fees. When asked what the objection was to charging high fees when clients are willing to pay, he retorted, “If a man is willing to be robbed, will you be a thief?” In a country where it is estimated that there are more than 32 million cases pending in High Courts and subordinate courts, a reduction in lawyer fees will definitely enhance people’s access to justice.
