FDI cap

July 18, 2013 02:04 am | Updated 02:04 am IST

The Centre’s decision to enhance the FDI cap in key sectors is a setback to the self-reliance that any dignified government of an independent country should aspire for. The country now has only two options, both equally pernicious: a government that enjoys the status of a client in a full-fledged neo-colonial arrangement and a government under the present Chief Minister of Gujarat with no shedding of the American and European burden.

Cry, the beloved country, is what we should be saying as Alan Paton said decades ago about South Africa.

The decision is another severe blow to the already ailing economy. Instead of treating the wound, the government is going in for amputation.

A.G. Rajmohan,
