End of an era

Dev Anand was a rare example of a courageous and devoted film personality — an actor, director and producer who was creative and stylish, yet down to earth in both reel and real life.

A strong believer in himself, he gave the audience in the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s a romantic hero they could both copy and look up to. He always took a personal interest in the music and songs of his films, which is why most of his films were musical hits, too.

The year 2011 is particularly cruel and sad as it has snatched away many of our favourite personalities. The doyen of Hindustani music, Bhimsen Joshi; the stylish cricketer Mansur Ali Khan, the Nawab of Pataudi; the energetic and versatile actor, Shammi Kapoor; the ghazal maestro, Jagjit Singh; the great poet and singer, Bhupen Hazarika, who took us to the lovely Assam through his melodies; and now, the evergreen flamboyant romantic hero, Dev Anand. It is difficult to reconcile to the thought that these great and distinguished personalities who influenced us one way or the other through their bundle of talents and marvellous art are no more.

Dev Anand epitomised youth, vigour and romance in both reel and real life. The evergreen hero who fired the imagination of many a couple and youngster of his generation truly enjoyed, savoured and celebrated every moment of his life.

The songs of his films were hits — “gaata rahe mera dil” still remains etched in my mind. As rightly opined by a reader, let us not mourn Dev Anand. Instead, we need to celebrate and emulate his approach and attitude towards life.

I first saw Dev Anand in Paying Guest opposite Nutan, and what a romantic pair they made! I was just 12 years old and Dev Anand stole my heart and has been my favourite actor ever since. As a teenager, I had pictures of him in my room and now and then hugged them, much to the consternation of my grandmother.

Destiny has snatched Dev Anand from the lives of movie lovers. He portrayed all his characters with zeal and he lived his life to the fullest with no regrets.

Dev Anand's smile will remain a glowing memory for years to come. Besides being charming and full of life, he is best described by his humanism in the tinsel world.

Dev Anand was Bollywood's very own Peter Pan. A whole generation of moviegoers grew up watching such acclaimed hits as Jewel Thief , Heera Paana , Hum Dono , Guide and Hare Rama, Hare Krishna . He epitomised all that was suave and urban on the big screen. Hindi filmdom will be much the poorer with his demise.
