EC’s autonomy

The Election Commission is undoubtedly one of the few constitutional institutions in the country that continue to uphold their autonomy in letter and spirit and the outgoing Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi well and truly shares the credit for it (The Wednesday interview: “‘EC’s biggest challenge is parties’ use of tainted money in polls’,” July 5). In the battle of nerves regarding the invincibility of EVMs, the EC stood its ground and acquitted itself honourably. However, it burnt its fingers when it over-zealously sought power to issue contempt orders.
