Disturbing

The editorial “ >Irrational prejudice ” (Aug. 1) made disturbing reading. There is still widespread misconception on HIV. Lack of education adds in perpetuating the stigma surrounding HIV, and the reluctance to integrate HIV-positive individuals in the mainstream. The government should declare the HIV-positives disabled. No child should be denied educational opportunities simply because he or she is HIV-positive.

The Goa incident, in which 13 HIV positive orphans were forced to leave school because of pressure from parents of other students, is shameful. Under the law, children have the Right to Education. Are the children to blame for their plight?
