Discordant notes

The stand adopted by Ilayaraja is upsetting but I am sure he knows that he is not the sole proprietor of any movie song (“The songs are mine, Ilayaraja tells SPB”, March 20). The producer who financed the film, the poet who wrote the lyrics, the composer, and the singers are sure to have an equal share. Why must he spoil the spirit of the art?

Every fan of Tamil film songs is bound to be shocked. No one can deny the fact that it is the beautiful renderings by S.P. Balasubrahmanyam and Chitra which have played a great role in making several of Mr. Raja’s compositions become superhits. SPB has been extremely graceful in his reaction. Music lovers will be the losers.
