Curbing free speech

February 25, 2014 12:31 am | Updated December 04, 2021 11:26 pm IST

This refers to the article, “In defence of the offensive” (Feb.21). Alternative histories and narratives are prerequisites to a vibrant democracy. The medieval Christian Church in Europe and Stalinist Russia suppressed alternative narratives and dissent to sustain their authority, which was undemocratic and fascist, over the people. Right from the time The Age of Reason was published, and which landed Thomas Paine in trouble, to happenings now, it is unfortunate that the assault on free speech continues unabated.

It is sad to live in a country where freedom can be suppressed so easily. I really hope this changes as a younger India grows up and takes up leadership. And about Wendy Doniger’s book, I will find it and buy it to prove that no one can take away my right to learn (in this case, about my own religion).
