This refers to the report, “ >Rohtak sisters thrash harassers on moving bus ” (Dec. 1). That two young women took on three men is commendable and will motivate other girls to act in a similar manner. But this can happen only if the government ensures the safety of women after such incidents take place, as what women fear the most is that harassers may attack them again if they react. If the government takes such steps, then spectators too will not remain mute but take some action.
Aman Nara,
Haryana It is disappointing to see the apathy of other passengers during the Rohtak incident. The girls fought valiantly but what would their fate have been if they had not reacted? It is really distressing to see this unhelpful bystanding attitude. Some law must be enacted whereby people who remain silent in such instances should also be punished. This indifference is what gives inspiration to unruly elements.

The two young women have shown indomitable courage by countering the advances by the three men. It is good that the Haryana government has decided to honour them on Republic Day. But it is unfortunate that the other passengers on the bus refused to come to their aid; instead, some had the cheek to find fault with the girls. It is time the government came down harshly on these molesters.
