Child labour

While supporting the need to eradicate child labour (June 12), one should not ignore the necessity to augment the family income, which forces children to seek menial employment in hotels and other places. The need to establish a welfare society free from want is important if the efforts to abolish child labour are to bear fruits. The Tamil film, Kutty , portrays the social evil in its stark nakedness. It should be dubbed in all languages and exhibited to shock the nation's conscience.

Although child labour is not a new challenge, we need to look at it every now and then. Even in the recent IPL extravaganza, we did not seem to care or acknowledge that in many matches, the boundary boys looked below 15. All citizens are guilty of not trying hard enough to find a solution to the problem of child labour.
