It is saddening to hear about the demise of U.R. Rao, a great technologist (“U.R. Rao, genial genius of ISRO,” July 26). A great tribute to Rao and others who have enabled India’s march ahead in science and technology (S&T) will be to communicate the importance of S&T in nation-building to the general public. Just like Dr. Rao throughout his career engaged in promoting S&T to high-school students and encouraged them to pursue careers in the field, efforts are needed in spreading the significance of science in national development. Technology will have a major role to play in ‘Make in India’ initiatives and the country needs a skilled S&T workforce for that. Media, government and industry should join hands in boosting enthusiasm in science among the younger generation. This will be a good way to honour scientists like Rao.
