Abuse and awareness

July 05, 2016 12:48 am | Updated 12:48 am IST

I was very shocked by the reports, “6-year-old raped, killed by teenager in Salem district” and “10-year-old raped, murdered in Hyderabad suburb” (both July 4). Isn’t there an offenders database or awareness programmes for families in rural areas? The media has the power to do more rather than write about such incidents as space fillers. How much better India would be if the public is better informed and better equipped to fight such injustices. We are supposed to be a free and rising nation but such stories should not be swept under the carpet. We shouldn’t be afraid to speak up against injustice; those who live in rural India need a voice.
