A precursor?

This refers to the act of Shiv Sena MP Rajan Vichare who force-fed a chapati to a Muslim catering supervisor at Mahrashtra Sadan. It looks as though such incidents are samples of what awaits the minorities in India. If forcing a person who is on a fast to eat is arrogance, how is one to describe the arguments of the Sena and the BJP leaders defending the act? Anarchy will be the end-product in a nation where the majority community fails to accept and exercise its responsibility of protecting the rights and honour of the minorities.

The incident is highly condemnable and such actions are unworthy of a Member of Parliament. However, it is a case of misbehaviour and should not be given a communal colour.

The force-fed person was a human being, and the treatment meted out to him was harsh. Even assuming that Mr. Vichare was unaware that the supervisor was a Muslim, the action was unbecoming of an MP. He owes an apology. Mere explanations won’t do.

Cutting across religion and caste, the people of India voted overwhelmingly for Narendra Modi with a lot of hope. But if forces that question Sania Mirza’s appointment as the brand ambassador of Telangana and defend the Sena’s brazen force-feeding of a Muslim during Roza go unchecked, the BJP will lose its support among Indians.

One of the reasons for Mr. Modi’s landslide win was his ability to speak well. Thanks to his principled stand on many issues, the country was confident of a decisive leadership.

Lately, the confidence is dwindling. With the increasing number of radical statements and actions from the members of the ruling coalition, one cannot but wonder what the Prime Minister is doing to control his own men.
