One fails to understand why the Parliamentary Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice has recommended a review of the Model Code of Conduct, which is meant to help conduct free and fair elections (“A code to defend,” May 30). The purpose of the Election Commission is to discipline the process and ensure that all contesting parties have a level-playing field.
Weakening the Commission by removing some of its powers will reduce it to virtually nothing. It should continue to have the power to disqualify and cancel the registration of parties which violate the code.

In order to ensure free and fair elections, which are fundamental to a democracy, the Election Commission should be empowered to cancel the registration of the parties which violate the norms. One hopes wiser counsel will prevail on Parliament.
