A NEET sidestep

February 10, 2017 03:03 am | Updated 03:03 am IST

In the almost unanimous resistance that Tamil Nadu has put up against the introduction of NEET, what is often forgotten is the end result and the primary purpose of the common selection system (Editorial –“Testing times on NEET”, Feb.8). It is to benefit the common man, who, by all means, has the fundamental right to the safety of his life and to quality medical care provided by very skilled medical professionals with the right calibre and aptitude. NEET serves that purpose to a great extent, especially in a time when medical education has become murkier and commercialised. The purpose of spending so much of taxpayer money on medical education and the inherent logic behind any selection system is not just to provide medical admission to our youngsters in an easy way. It will be a blatant exposure of the incompetence in the school education system in Tamil Nadu if it still insists in shifting the goal posts.
