15th Lok Sabha

This refers to the report, “Din yields to calm on final day of Lok Sabha” (Feb.22), where members were reported to have found words of praise for one another on the final day of Parliament. The 15th Lok Sabha will be best remembered for being the setting for street-like battles and where parliamentary decorum was thrown out of the window, especially in the run-up to the passage of the Telangana Bill. Only 25 per cent of the total number of sessions saw useful work, while the rest was just chaos and pandemonium. The ruling UPA and the Opposition should be ashamed of this. No thought seems to have been given to the drain on peoples’ money. There was no semblance of order or cooperation in most sessions. One feels that the Congress president along with the Prime Minister could have walked the extra mile and reached out to the Opposition to ensure the smooth running of Parliament. The Speaker could have been tougher than she was seen to be.

The political parties which are a part of the 15th Lok Sabha have taken Parliament for granted as a battleground, letting down the people who voted for them and sent them there to represent them in a befitting manner. The sorry state of affairs, especially after the pepper spray attack, will make voters look closely at the option of a third alternative. The national parties are largely to blame for the mess. Much could have been done during its tenure.

After watching and hearing of the behaviour of our MPs in Parliament, why should we continue to use the term “honourable” while referring to them? Is it not time we replaced it with a word rooted in reality?
