A man from India was stabbed to death by two muggers in East London on Friday after he reportedly chased them to retrieve a handbag they had snatched from a woman.
Police identified the victim as Sukhwinder (31) and issued a public appeal for any eyewitnesses to come forward and help them in identifying the killers.
Sukhwinder was said to be a builder and his family was away in India when he was killed.
Police said that late on Friday, a 28-year-old woman was walking home from the Barking railway station when she was attacked by two men who then escaped with her bag.
Sukhwinder chased the suspects and an “altercation” followed during which he was stabbed.
He was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.
The suspects were described as two “dark-skinned” youths possibly of African or Afro-Caribbean origin.
Tragic death
“This is a tragic death of a man who was killed for attempting to stop others committing crime, and our thoughts are with Sukhwinder’s family. However, I would also like to reassure the wider community that tragic events such as these are rare. “I am appealing for anyone that knows who committed this crime, or who has any information about those who committed this crime, to do the right thing and come forward and contact police,” Detective Inspector John Sandlin investigating the case said.
