A note from the Readers’ Editor: On July 11, 2013 there was a report in the Vijayawada edition titled ‘Promoting girl child rights’ that failed to meet basic journalistic principles. An insensitive quote was attributed to ‘Ms. Carol Fifon,’ founder of Care and Share Trust because the reporter did not cover the event, and used a third party source to file the story. There was no attempt to check with a second source. This was very unprofessional behaviour on the part of the reporter, and the Editor expresses his regret to Ms. Carol Faison (even her name was misspelt in the report) for any damage the article would have caused her. I consider this a failure of both the reporter in particular, and the Vijayawada bureau in general.

“Delhi, Haryana to roll out food security scheme on August 20” (July 14, 2013, some editions) referred to August 20 as Rajiv Gandhi’s death anniversary. It should have been birth anniversary.

Factual inaccuracies in the Op-Ed page article, “No pink chaddis for the PMK” (July 13, 2013): A sentence in the penultimate paragraph read: “By 2006, the VCK had elected an MP and two MLAs, …” Actually, the VCK’s first parliamentarian was Mr. Thol Thirumavalan in 2009. Referring to the following sentences in fifth paragraph from the bottom which read: “Under this [1967- DMK] regime, only the higher order non-Brahmins were empowered, …” and “With the rise of the M.G. Ramachandran-led Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (later AIADMK) in 1972, the Thevars found a voice ”, some readers pointed out that A. Govindasamy – a Vanniyar – found a place in C.N. Annadurai’s Cabinet. Besides, Anbil K. Dharmalingam and Panruti Ramachandran were included in Mr. Karunanidhi-led DMK ministry in 1971. The readers are right.

In “High Court upholds tribunal order” (July 11, 2013, some editions), there was a reference to FERA (Foreign Exchange Regulation Act 1792). It should have been FEMA (Foreign Exchange Management Act 1999.

The interview in the Business Review page (July 15, 2013) described Mr. R. Vaithianathan as MD of Tata Capital Ltd. He is actually the MD of Tata Capital Housing Finance Ltd. The blurb published with the story was from a question. It was not a response from Mr. Vaithianathan.

In the report, “Glenmark’s generic anti-epilepsy drug in patent row” (July 13, 2013, Business page), the abbreviation FDF stands for finished dosage forms, and not free dosage forms as reported.

The scoreboard in “Afridi helps Pakistan to 224” (July 15, 2013, Sport) gave Misbah’s score as 52 whereas the report gave it as 42. The scoreboard is right.
