Strike call in Meghalaya

May 17, 2010 02:11 am | Updated November 11, 2016 05:52 am IST - IMPHAL:

The Khasi Students Union and several non-government organisations in Meghalaya have called a 24-hour general strike in the State on Tuesday in protest against the shooting to death of “innocent persons” on Friday by the police at the disputed Langpi area along the Assam-Meghalaya border. Many others were injured in the incident.

The Meghalaya police have beefed up security to ensure law and order. Officials said that though the situation was tense, it was fully under control.

Both Assam and Meghalaya have been making claims and counterclaims over Langpi. There are ministerial and official level contacts between the two States to prevent any violent incidents in the border village.
