“Kudankulam project poses grave threat to southern Tamil Nadu”
Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko has appealed to all political parties to sink their differences and pass a resolution against the commissioning of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project.
“Since this nuclear power programme poses a grave threat to the entire southern Tamil Nadu, all political parties should join hands with the protesters to ensure the scrapping of the project,” he said at Idinthakarai on Wednesday, when he called on the protesters.
Mr. Vaiko said developed nations such as Germany, Japan and France, which had fully understood the “evil impact of nuclear power programmes” had decided to close down nuclear reactors in their countries in a phased manner.
The United States, which was exporting nuclear reactors to other countries, had not established new nuclear power programmes after 1979.
Against this backdrop, the Union government was actively pursing the KKNPP. If any serious accident occurred, entire southern Tamil Nadu would be destroyed, he said.
The MDMK, which never believed in ‘vote bank politics,’ would always be a part of any protest being organised across the globe to safeguard the welfare and rights of Tamils.
“The political parties, including the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the DMK, should adopt a resolution against the KKNPP in their party’s general and the executive council meetings and express solidarity with the agitating public. The MDMK, in its recently held conference at Karur, has passed a resolution in this regard,” he said and read out the resolution at the protest venue in front of the Lourdes Church.
Coming down heavily on DMK president M. Karunanidhi, Mr. Vaiko said the former Chief Minister, who wanted the early commissioning of the plant’s first reactor and had put the blame on Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for the delay, had suddenly changed his stance after witnessing the unprecedented upsurge in the anti-nuke agitation.
“Mr. Karunanidhi is trying to politicise even this serious issue which is threatening the life and livelihood of several lakhs of people.”
To express solidarity with the protesters, Mr. Vaiko also got into a pit dug up in the sand and raised slogans against the project
Later, Mr. Vaiko met the family of A. Sahayam, who died in a hospital after suffering a head injury during the ‘jal satyagraha’ held at Idinthakarai against the project.
The MDMK general secretary handed over Rs. 50,000 to the bereaved family.

No need to scrap Koodankulam. The two large water storage units can be easily
converted to storage tanks of molten salt, which will store the sun's heat to 500c
during the day and release it at night for boiling water at night. In my class room at
the University of California, Berkeley, Edward Teller (the father of the atom bomb and
one of the designers of the nuclear reactor) came specially as a guest lecturer to
WARN US about NUCLEAR POWER. He said using nuclear fission just to boil water to
turn turbines for electricity was akin to making a BONFIRE to light a little candle. All
the extra heat would just go into the environment. He was distressed at the
compromises govt in connivance with engineers made, with regards to safety in
these plants and said using uranium was IN NO WAY an economical way of producing
electricity. Tirunelveli is blessed with GIGAWATTS of sunshine and could power all of
India if CSPs (concentrated solar plants) using molten salt and mirrors, boiled the
water
From a vibrant MP, Vaiko allowed himself to be reduced to a clown and a
non-entity. No one takes him seriously and hence associating him with a
cause dilutes the cause itself. MDMK, PMK and the like have become easy protesters like any common man who joins any protest for livelihood. My
question to all these people is what were they doing for the last 22
years and how Kalpakkam is safe even after over 40 years.
hope, we will win against Nuclear plant production in kudankulam, by god's grace.
Near Kanyakumari - Tirunelveli, we have worlds largest harmless wind mill - Power creators.
So, please Support anytime harmless things for mankind.
We also HUMANS.
Mr. vaiko is trying to join hands with anti nuclear protesters just to
sustain his political life. Let him come out with feasible alternatives
for the production of electricity on a mass scale. The anti nuclear
protesters should be tackled as per the law of the land. Recent survey
conducted by NDTV shows majority of people want nuclear power.

Indian High Commission in Colombo has issued a statement saying that this power plant is safe and has highest international safety standards. However in case of a massive Tsunami, the damage it could cause for the tamilians in TN and tamilians in Mannar Sri Lanka is enormous and may anhilliate the entire tamil population. This is a serious issue and atleast ONCE we agree with this politician Vaiko who is demanding the shut down of this nuclear plant as even the developed nations have understood the dangers these power plants poses for human race. This was constructed without any tacit approval from Sri Lanka
We are criticizing the protests against KKNPP because we suffer a lot
without electrical power. In France the people ask for installation of
new nuclear power projects in their provinces; it is observed that
France gets nearly 25% of its electrical power from nuclear energy. The
govt must allow KKNPP which was started nearly ten years ago to be
commissioned soon and any new projects must be analysed threadbare by
the scientists.
