Expressing concern over the prospects of the long-term samba paddy crop as water from Mettur was not released for cultivation, DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Friday said whether Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was writing to the Prime Minister on various issues or not, she was more interested in releasing to media her letters.

In a statement here, he said kuruvai cultivation could not be undertaken as Mettur dam was not opened and now there was a question mark over prospects of samba cultivation.

Mr. Karunanidhi said this was the Chief Minister’s second letter, asking him to convene the meeting of the Cauvery River Authority, and he also joined Ms. Jayalalithaa in her demand for convening the meeting.

He added that the Prime Minister had not convened the meeting even after her second letter, probably because of the views expressed by her against the Authority in the past. “In 1998, she said the Authority would not serve even an iota of purpose to Tamil Nadu, described it as a toothless body,” he said.
