The presence of a good number of educational institutions notwithstanding ragging is not a major source of concern for the Nilgiris police. The reason being, ragging related incidents are few and far between in the district. However that has not lulled the police in Nilgiris into a sense of complacency.

Speaking to The Hindu in Nilgiris on Tuesday, the Superintendent of Police S.Nizamuddin said that though only one ragging related incident had been reported last year the police personnel at various levels have been asked to ensure that they do not let their guard down.

Since the academic year has just commenced the police have initiated steps to enhance awareness about ragging and its consequences. Stating that it was an offence which attracted stringent punishment, he said that students should be familiarized with anti-ragging laws.

Anti-ragging complaints boxes have been kept in various colleges. Police officers will open them once a week. As part of the measures to prevent students from indulging in ragging a rally was organized in Nilgiris on Tuesday.
