A chance for students to take part in brainstorming session on environment

July 05, 2012 02:58 am | Updated 02:58 am IST - CHENNAI:

There are innumerable debates held on ‘go green’ and ‘save the earth,’ but it takes more than that to know what would actually do good for the environment. Children across the State this month will get a unique opportunity to express their thoughts on how they wish to contribute to the environment.

In a theme-based science expo called ‘Veetuku Oru Vingaani 2012’ organised by Puthiya Thalaimurai, school students from 31 districts across the State will present their exhibits and presentations on the ‘4Rs – Reduce, Recycle, Repair and Reuse.’

“The presentation can be as simple as a chart paper and they can be based on concepts from physics, chemistry and biology. What we are looking for is originality in thoughts and that the children do not take the easier route of copying from the internet,” said RBU Shyam Kumar, Director – Operations, Puthiya Thalaimurai.

The idea is also to facilitate a platform for children from rural areas to compete with their urban counterparts because only ideas matter, he added.

The top teams from the 31 districts will participate in the grand finals in Chennai on August 22, 2012 to be crowned winners.

Environmental experts and professors from educational institutions have been called to judge the event.

The first event will be held at Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School, Lourdes Campus, Vanarapet in Puducherry at 10 a.m. Dr. Iqbal Singh, Governor, Puducherry and N. Rangaswamy, Chief Minister, Puducherry will participate in it.
