Bus fare hiked to favour private operators: Stalin

“Secret behind such a steep increase will come out soon”

December 02, 2011 02:17 am | Updated 02:30 am IST - RAMANATHAPURAM:

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government increased bus fare only to favour private operators, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader M.K. Stalin said on Thursday.

Addressing a protest meeting against the increase in milk price and bus fare here, he said, “The secret behind such a steep increase in bus fare will come out soon.”

The DMK government did not increase the price of essential commodities and bus fare even when it was implementing various welfare schemes during a period of global economic crisis.

Many private bus operators had approached then Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, demanding increase in fare.

Even government officials, citing the huge loss incurred by the State Transport Corporation, had sought a hike. But, Mr. Karunanidhi said that he was not bothered about the corporations' loss.

“The corporations were introduced for the benefit of the people. I will not burden the people,” he had said.

Mr. Stalin criticised the AIADMK government for its decisions on Samacheer Kalvi and the dismissal of Makkal Nala Paniyalargal.
