Torrential rain submerges paddy fields in Kanyakumari

Paddy cultivated on hundreds of acres in the district is under water as rain continues in Kanyakumari district for the second successive day on Sunday.

The Pazhayaar flood has surrounded several residential areas and the paddy fields close to the watercourse and most of the irrigation tanks in the district are overflowing. Discharge of water from Petchipaarai and Perunchaani dams has been stopped following widespread rain.

Rainfall in the district (in mm): Petchipaarai 72.40, Perunchaani 72.80, Chitaar I 109, Chitaar II 24, Kottaaram 112, Nilappaarai 60, Eraniyal 103.20, Aanaikidangu 78, Colachel 110.40, Kurunthancode 38.20, Adaiyaamadai 97, Aaralvoizmozhi 80.80, Nagercoil 69, Boothapandi 78.10, Surulode 80, Kannimar 108, Mayilaadi 85.40, Thiruvattaar 140, Kozhiporevilai 76, Mullanginaavilai 63.80 and Puththan Anai 72.60.
