Portions in the textbooks of the State Board that have either been penned by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi or have to do with the achievements of his literary or political persona are likely to be omitted, according to sources in the School Education Department.
While some senior officials maintained that they had not received any formal order for the same from the new School Education Minister, C. Ve. Shanmugam, they said certain specific sections had been identified for deletion in the coming academic year.
‘Semmozhi Vaazhthu'
The ‘Semmozhi Vaazhthu' written by Mr. Karunanidhi in the context of the World Classical Tamil Conference in Coimbatore, sections on his efforts to obtain the ‘classical language' status for Tamil and excerpts of some of his writings are likely to be deleted from the syllabus, the sources said.
In an indication of possible changes in content, educational officers in some districts have been asked to suspend distribution of textbooks.
As over 80 per cent of the text books have been printed, the “unwanted portions” might merely be excised.
Mr. Shanmugam announced here on Wednesday that the textbooks brought out by the Tamil Nadu Textbook Corporation would be ready soon.
