The 2G scam will have a telling impact on the poll prospects of the DMK front, said Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy told reporters here on Monday.
Saying that the CBI enquiry is on track, he said inclusion of names was being done methodically. The name of Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram would shortly figure in the list for having been part of the conspiracy.
Pointing out that the CBI would get to the bottom of the conspiracy after going into the scam layer by layer, he said that by August former Union Minister of Communications A. Raja would be convicted.
The nature of the offence was such that he was likely to get life imprisonment. If he turned approver he might get off with a lighter sentence. “The jail is the safest place for him to be in now.”
In the next charge sheet Sonia Gandhi and family members of Chief Minister Karunanidhi would be included. By June 2012 the whole 2G mystery would be unravelled. He claimed that the DMK was heading for liquidation.
To a question, Mr. Swamy said that the Election Commission, “is doing a good job.”
Alleging that Ms. Gandhi and Mr. Chidambaram were planning to rig the elections in Tamil Nadu, he hoped that the Election Commission would not let its guard down.
The practice of distributing freebies for votes is tantamount to treating people like beggars, he said. The government should try to empower people to buy such items.
Claiming that the coordination between the Janata Party and the BJP is excellent, he expressed confidence that an impressive entry would be made in the Assembly next month. It was an alliance based on ideology.
“Our objective will be to control corruption,” he declared, and alleged that the DMK and the AIADMK had a secret understanding by which they would not harm each other beyond a point.
On Sri Lanka, he said that an autonomous State should be formed for Tamils with the help of the international community.
Mr. Swamy campaigned for candidates of the Janata Party and the BJP in Kotagiri, Ooty and Coonoor.
