Demanding that the motor in the well in Uthukinaru in Mamangam be repaired, and drinking water be supplied to them regularly, over 50 women of Anna Nagar blocked the Salem – Bengaluru National Highway here on Monday.

They said that over 8,000 people in Redipatti, Doctors Colony, Engineers Colony, Kanjanaickenpatty and other areas are dependent on the well. The motor got stuck a month ago, and the corporation took no effort to repair it. They said that the corporation officials had asked them to repair the motor, and they collected ₹ 13,000. They said that the civic body has not supplied water to them for the past three weeks forcing them to buy water from the open market. Selling of water for commercial purpose has increased in the area causing depletion of ground water level.

Corporation officials and the police promised to supply water regularly and the protest was withdrawn.

In Tiruchengodu, over 100 villagers of Velampalayam in S. Erayamangalam panchayat in Tiruchengodu Union blocked the road demanding that drinking water be supplied.

They said that water was not supplied to them in the last 10 days, but borewells were sunk at four places to sell water.

They blocked the Velur – Kokkarayanpettai Road for an hour. Revenue officials and the police held talks with them. Four borewells in farms lands were sealed by officials while one lorry was also seized. Later, the protest was withdrawn.
