The occupation of a barrack in Manipur’s Ukhrul district by the Nagaland police has made the state government to write to the Centre seeking its intervention.
The Manipur government has written to Union Home minister P. Chidambaram after an official team from the revenue department and state forces visited Jessami area in the district and ascertained this, Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh told reporters here on Friday evening.
Mr. Singh said the matter was also immediately taken up with the Nagaland government.
Ibobi Singh said his government was not consulted by the BSF when it handed over the barracks to the Nagaland police.
The BSF, he said, had no authority to do so even as a temporary measure.
State Chief Secretary D. S. Poonia also wrote to his Nagaland counterpart Lalthara to verify the position, official sources said.
Mr. Lalthara in his reply said the BSF unit stationed at Akash bridge on the Manipur side of the bank of river Tizu was suddenly pulled out for deployment in Tripura during the last Lok Sabha elections.
The Nagaland police, with clear understanding of the BSF, moved into the barracks for its protection till the forces returned, the Nagaland chief secretary wrote back, the sources said.
