The special investigation team (SIT) constituted to probe charges against K. Sudhakaran, MP, on Tuesday heard his former aide Prashanth Babu who disclosed earlier that the Congress leader here had plotted to murder Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader E.P. Jayarajan and hired goons from outside to carry out attacks against a CPI(M)-controlled co-operative press and a hotel here.

The three-member SIT headed by the Inspector General of Police (Thiruvananthapuram Range) Sheikh Dervesh Saheb visited here to hear Mr. Babu, whose disclosure against Mr. Sudhakaran led to the constitution of the team to investigate into the serious charges against the MP. Mr. Babu, who had worked as driver of Mr. Sudhakaran when the latter was district Congress President in the politically turbulent 1990s, was said to have repeated his charges against the MP first disclosed in an interview to a TV channel. Mr. Babu, who had also served as Congress councillor in the previous Kannur municipal council, had earlier appeared before the Superintendent of Police here and repeated his charges.

When contacted, the IG said that the purpose of the visit of the team was to hear Mr. Babu. He said that Mr. Babu was heard as part of the investigation into the charges against Mr. Sudhakaran.

Mr. Babu had disclosed on June 30 that Mr. Sudhakaran had conspired to murder Mr. Jayarajan. He had also alleged that the Congress leader had a role in the attack on the CPI(M)-controlled Co-operative Press and Savoury Hotel here in June 1992 in which a hotel worker was killed. He also disclosed that Congress workers including him had been listed as accused in the case of the attacks on the basis of a proxy list of accused given by Mr. Sudhakaran to the police.
