All-India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) is planning yearlong programmes on the theme ‘Give the girl child the right to be born’, starting from September 24.
The programme will be inaugurated at NMKRV College in Jayanagar III Block on Monday by film actor Ramesh Aravind, followed by presentation of papers by experts on various aspects of female foeticide.
Seminar
Vasundhara Bhoopati, K.S. Vimala, N. Prabha and Geeta Krishnamurthy will present papers on medical, social and cultural dimensions of foeticide. The programme will also be attended by well-known advocate Hemalatha Mahishi, and Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Madan Gopal. “A series of programmes will stretch over the year to create awareness among different sections of society, starting from colleges to government departments,” said Ms. Vimala of AIDWA. “Cause of the girl child should not get restricted to isolated activities of women’s groups,” she added.
Workshops, poetry reading sessions, staging of plays and so on are being planned.
Different days
It may be mentioned here that even though October 11 is recognised as the International Day of the Girl Child by the United Nations, UNICEF and CRY celebrate September 24 as the Day of the Girl Child. The Indian government declared January 24 as National Girl Child Day in 2009.
