A team of officials removed encroachments along the Edappadi – Sankagiri highway at Veerappampalayam near Edappadi on Tuesday.

Thirty houses, and about 40 shops have been constructed on the land belonging to the highways department along this road. The officials had already served notice on the encroachers to remove their belongings on their own. The revenue authorities had already given free house sites in Thangayur panchayat on the Sankagiri road to those belonging to the weaker sections of society residing on the encroached land.

The highways department launched steps to evict all those who continued to reside in the area.

Despite notices, they continued to occupy the land. The department has proposed to widen the road after the encroachments are removed.
