A new computed tomography scan (CT Scan) allotted for Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) was commissioned by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami through video-conferencing on Tuesday.

The hospital authorities said that the new scanner using 16-slice (slice denotes number of cross-sectional imaging taken) costs ₹ 1.57 crore.

The hospital was offering scanning service using a 4-slice scanner earlier.

“The new machine was allotted to the hospital through Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation Ltd. The old machine at the hospital used to generate around 20 scans a day. The new machine will be able to generate 150 scans a day,” said CMCH dean B. Asokan.

He said that the new machine is technologically advanced and can even generate 170 scans a day if required.

“According to Medical Council of India norms, 16-slice CT Scan machine is recommended for tertiary level hospitals like CMCH,” said Dr. Asokan.

The new machine can be operated for 23 hours.

The old machine will be used in district or taluk hospitals.

MLAs P.R.G. Arun Kumar, Amman K. Arujunan, V.C. Arukkutty, and O.K. Chinnaraj, resident medical officer R. Soundravel, among others were present at the inauguration.
