The Attur Municipality has slapped a ban on using plastic articles below 50 microns in the municipal limits in the interest of protecting the environment.
The municipality has imposed the ban from September 1.
In a press release issued here, K. Kannan, Municipal Commissioner, Attur, said that under the Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 the municipality has slapped a ban on the usage of plastic carry bags, plastic plates, plastic papers, table spreads below 50 microns.
The grocery shops, hotels, bakeries, medical shops, and all other business establishments should avoid using the plastic bags. The officials will seize the plastic articles below 50 microns, and action will be initiated against the shops under the Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016, the release said.
The release called upon the traders and the local people to extend cooperation to put an end to using plastic materials.
Meanwhile, the officials of the Attur Municipality conducted surprise check and seized 20 kg of plastic carry bags and other materials from 20 shops in the town on Sunday. Selvaraj, municipal health officer, slapped a fine of ₹ 7,500 on the traders, official sources said.
