Hundreds of people attended a mass campaign in support of jallikattu organised by members of the public at VOC Grounds here on Tuesday.

The campaign, which started with barely 100 people attending, swelled by nearly 1,500 by evening.

Those who attended the campaign staged a sit-in condemning the arrest of jallikattu protesters at Alanaganallur in Madurai.

Manikandan Thangavel, one of the organisers of the mass campaign, said that the event was organised without the support of any political party or organisation.

“We had formed a small group, and conducted a social media campaign ahead of the event. Messages and posts in support of the campaign were shared through whatsapp, and facebook,” said Mr. Thangavel.

Those who participated in the campaign held posters supporting jallikattu, and seeking to lift the ban.

As the crowd turned bigger by evening, participants turned on flash lights on their mobile phones, and waved in support of jallikatu.

Jallikattu supporters formed a human chain at Codissia grounds in the evening.

Those who participated in the event later joined the protest at VOC Grounds.

Students have planned a march from the Airport Road Junction in Peelamedu to VOC Park in the city on Wednesday at 9 a.m.

A small group of citizens organised a protest at Sungam Ground, near Ondipudur, against ban on jallikattu. A similar protest was organised at Pichanur too.

Commotion prevailed at Kannampalayam in Sulur when a group of persons announced that they would defy the ban and conduct jallikattu.

Later, they took out a protest march.
