Envoys hail Brexit progress

Negotiators from the European Union and Britain on Monday hailed major progress in the Brexit talks, but conceded there had been no breakthrough on keeping open the Irish border. Britain is due to leave the European Union at the end of March 2019, but Brexit talks must be concluded by this fall to leave national parliaments in the bloc time to ratify any deal. “We have travelled a large section of the path toward an orderly withdrawal,” EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier told reporters in Brussels, in front of a power-point display highlighting that a political agreement has been reached on most issues. Alongside him, British envoy David Davis said the progress made is a “significant step” toward a final deal.

Israeli prosecutors charged a French consular driver on Monday with using a diplomatic car to elude border inspections and spirit guns from the Islamist-ruled Gaza Strip to the Israeli-occupied West Bank on behalf of a Palestinian smuggling ring. The indictment against Romain Franck, a 23-year-old French citizen, was served hours after a gag order was lifted on his Feb. 15 arrest by Israel's Shin Bet domestic security agency, whose roles include counter-terrorism and counter-espionage.

The Goa capital Panaji was hit by heavy traffic jams and major chaos as thousands of mining and allied industry workers sought to march into it to protest the closure of the iron ore extraction industry in the State. A minor skirmish occurred between the protesters and policemen near the Kadamba bus stand here when District Collector Nila Mohanan stopped the agitators from entering the city.

Thousands of independent drivers who are on the Ola and Uber cab aggregator services are on an indefinite  strike  from midnight on Sunday against the companies’ policies.

'One nation one law'

In a day marred by protests of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu members, the MPs from Telangana too had a demand — to link MGNREGS with farm labour. The Centre's employment guarantee scheme providing employment for rural people but the farmers complain they are facing shortage of labourers during the season after the scene was implemented. The TRS, during its plenary recently, decided to urge the Centre to link farming to the scheme.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) issued a whip to its MPs to attend the ongoing second leg of the budget session of Parliament till the end. This is to be prepared for a possible discussion on the no-confidence motion moved by it against the NDA government over the implementation of the A.P. Reorganisation Act and various assurances given in the Rajya Sabha at the time of bifurcation.
