After his successful state visit to Washington, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived here on a three-day trip on Thursday to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meet which is expected to be dominated by issues like terrorism, climate change and the global economic crisis.
Mr. Singh will attend the inauguration session of the summit on Friday of the 53-nation grouping of former British colonies.
The meet is expected to deliberate on a number of global challenges with particular focus on terrorism, climate change and the international financial crisis.
On the sidelines of the summit, Mr. Singh will meet French President Nicholas Sarkozy, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremanayake among other world leaders.
Earlier in the day Singh wound up his four-day State visit in Washington, first by a foreign leader under the Obama Administration, during which the two countries decided to transform their ties into “one of the defining” relationships of the 21st century.
Mr. Singh was given a warm send-off in the form of a 19-gun salute and guard of honour amid a drizzle at the Andrews Air Force base as he left for Trinidad and Tobago.
India and the U.S. signed MoUs in counter-terrorism and five other pacts during the visit.
