Cold condition prevails in Kashmir
Bright sunshine provided some relief to residents of Kashmir in the daytime but Kargil town continued to reel under intense cold conditions, with the mercury staying six degrees below the freezing point. The minimum temperature fell to a bone-chilling minus 18.5 degrees Celsius in the town on Sunday, an official of the Met. department said on January 8. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded its coldest night this winter at minus 6.1 degrees Celsius — marginally down from minus 6 degrees Celsius recorded the previous night.
It's 4-0 for Australia
Australia romped to an innings and 123-run victory over England after dismissing the tourists for 180 on the final day of the fifth match of the Ashes on Monday to complete a 4-0 triumph. Australia only failed to win in Melbourne, where the Test ended in a high-scoring draw. Australia had retained the Ashes after the third Test in Perth.

The highly anticipated wear-black protest at the Golden Globes took off Sunday as soon as the red carpet opened, including A-listers Meryl Streep in a deep V-cut gown and Michelle Williams in an embellished off-the-shoulder look with “Me Too” founder Tarana Burke at her side. Streep, accompanied by domestic violence advocate Ai-jen Poo, said she chose black to stand in solidarity with others trying to right the power imbalance that leads to sexual abuse.
The first award of the night, perhaps fittingly, went to one of Hollywood’s most powerful women- Nicole Kidman, for her performance in HBO’s The Big Little Lies , a series she and Reese Witherspoon also produced. Kidman chalked the win up to “the power of women.”
Dakar Rally
Frenchman Cyril Despres of Peugeot won the second round of the Dakar Rally on Sunday and took the overall lead of the race. The third-place finisher in last year's race finished in 2 hours, 56 minutes and 51 seconds for the 195 miles (267 kilometres) around Pisco, in Peru. He finished ahead of two French teammates, with a 48-second lead on Stephane Peterhansel and 3:08 in front of Sebastien Loeb. Qatari Nasser Al-Attiyah, who won the first round, ended nearly 15 minutes behind the leader in fifth.
11 dead in Mexico clashes
Clashes involving gunmen, a community police force and state police killed 11 people in the troubled southern state of Guerrero in Mexico on Sunday, while a separate series of shootouts the previous night left seven dead in the northern beach resort of San Jose del Cabo. Guerrero state security spokesman Roberto Alvarez said eight people were initially killed when gunmen ambushed community police before dawn in the town of La Concepcion, near the resort city of Acapulco. Two of the dead were from the community force.
Deep freeze on the East Coast
The blast of Arctic air that engulfed portions of the East Coast in the United States has broken cold temperature records in several cities. The National Weather Service said the temperature in Worcester, Massachusetts, fell to minus 9 on Sunday, breaking a record of minus 5 set in 1942. In Providence, Rhode Island, temperatures fell to minus 3, breaking a record low of minus 1 set in 1912. And in Hartford, Connecticut, the temperature dropped to minus 9, smashing the previous record of 1, also set in 1912. Boston tied a low-temperature record set more than a century ago of minus 2 in 1896. The good news is the bone-chilling air is set to push out of the region.
