CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat on Monday said when Kashmir was burning and Manipur people were facing a crisis due to continued blockade, the UPA government's priority was the nuclear bill.
Speaking to journalists here, he said the bill was brought at the behest of the U.S. to safeguard its interests. “You can see the priority of the UPA government. Kashmir is burning. In Manipur, people are facing shortage of life-saving drugs on account of continued blockade and their [the government's] attention is on the nuclear bill.”
The U.S. wants to sell nuclear reactors and in case of an accident there should not be any liability on foreign suppliers and they were working on this U.S. agenda, he said, adding that “the Congress-led UPA government is desperate to see it [the bill] through much before U.S. president Barack Obama's visit to India in November.”
He said the Left would continue its efforts to ensure the bill was not passed without liabilities on the suppliers. He cited the Bhopal gas tragedy where the culprits went scot-free. The Congress was always against autonomy to States and wanted to retain power at the Centre, he said.
