Setting the tone for campaign ahead of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections due in Haryana in 2019, BJP national president Amit Shah on Thursday hit out at the Congress for indulging in and promoting corruption during its rule both at the the Centre and in the State.
“Haryana’s name had become synonymous with scams when Mr. Bhupinder Singh Hooda was in power for 10 years. Since 2014, when the BJP government took over, the State has witnessed a corruption-free and transparent regime,” said Mr. Shah.
He was here to participate in the party’s ‘Yuva Hunkar rally’, in which leaders and workers from across the State came on motorcycles. Mr. Shah himself reached the rally venue on a motorcycle, driven by BJP State unit president Subhash Barala.
Mr. Shah praised Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for providing a “transparent and corruption-free” governance. He criticised the Congress’s decision to stage protest, seeking details of the BJP rally. “We are answerable to the people and not to the Congress. We are not accountable to Congress,” he said.
“During the Congress regime before 2014, around Rs 12 lakh crore worth scams and instances of corruption took place at the Centre and in Haryana, following which people ousted them and gave the BJP a massive mandate,” he said.
Haryana Congress president Ashok Tanwar was detained for showing black flags during the bike rally and later released.
