Vizag engineer abducted in Nigeria

Sai Srinivas, a civil engineer from Visakhapatnam, was reportedly kidnapped from Gboko, a town in the Benue State of North-central Nigeria, on Wednesday

The incident took place when Mr. Srinivas (44) and his colleague Anish Sharma, also from India, were travelling in a convoy of three cars to the Dangote Cement Plc plant, where they work, from their residential quarters, at about 7.30 a.m..

Both the Indians were travelling in the last car. The moment the two cars passed the signal, a group of men surrounded their car, dragged the driver out and took them away.

Srinivas has been working for the Dangote Cement in Gboko for the last three years. He had earlier worked for the Aditya Birla group in Raipur.

The engineer’s wife Lalita met the inspectors of the Special Branch in the Police Commissionerate and also submitted a formal complaint to District Collector N. Yuvaraj on Thursday.

The distraught woman told The Hindu that she called up a senior official at the cement plant on Wednesday after she failed to reach her husband on the phone. Her worst fears came true when the plant officials informed her on Thursday morning that Srinivas had been kidnapped.

According to Ms. Lalita, the company officials told her that the entire city was cordoned off by the police and an intensive search launched for the kidnapped duo.

“A senior official from the company told us that it could be the handiwork of local gangs. But so far, the kidnappers have not contacted any of us,” said Ms. Lalita.

The District Collector and the police officials said that emails and letters would be sent immediately to the Ministry of Foreign affairs and embassies for the required action.
