V.G. Sekaran, chief designer of long range missile Agni-V and Director of the Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL), has been appointed as Chief Controller R&D (Missiles & Strategic Systems), DRDO and Programme Director, Agni.

According to a release here, Dr. Sekaran, is one of the core members of the Ballistic Missile Programme. His pioneering contributions and research in solid propellant rocket motors is now the main thrust and backbone of the long range missile system.

After graduating in mechanical engineering, he did M.E. in aeronautical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He was recipient of visiting studentship at Queen’s University where he completed Ph.D in aeronautical engineering in 1981 and was subsequently awarded Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Southampton.

Dr. Sekaran joined DRDO in 1984 and was involved in the design and development of re-entry systems and technology for ballistic missile applications. The design and engineering was demonstrated in many flight tests, the release said.

Under his leadership, ASL carried out extensive research and indigenously developed critical technologies. He has received numerous awards, including DRDO Scientist of the Year award, Path Breaking Research/ Outstanding Technology Development award and the Technology Leadership award.
