Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was admitted to the AIIMS here for a urinary tract infection on Monday, the hospital said.
In a statement issued at 10.45 pm, the AIIMS said Mr. Vajpayee, who was admitted to the hospital following complaints of a lower respiratory tract infection and kidney issues, was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection.
Appropriate treatment was being administered to him under the supervision of a team of doctors, it added.
Earlier, the hospital had said 93-year-old Vajpayee, who had not been keeping well for long, was admitted for routine check-ups and investigations and that his condition was stable.
A team of doctors, under the supervision of AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria, was attending to the nonagenarian leader, the hospital said.
Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, 93, was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for “a routine check-up and investigations” on Monday.
Accordingly to a release issued by the hospital authorities, Mr. Vajpayee was hospitalised on the advice of doctors.
At AIIMS, he has been under the supervision of the Director Dr. Randeep Guleria who is also a pulmonologist. Dr Guleria has served as the personal physician to Vajpayee for over three decades.
“ Mr. Vajpayee has been admitted with complaints of lower respiratory tract infection and kidney issues. He is in the ICU and undergoing dialysis,” a source at the AIIMS said.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi was among the first to visit the former Prime Minister at AIIMS followed by BJP national president Amit Shah and Union Health Minister J P Nadda. Later in the evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Vajpayee, who was brought to AIIMS at around 11:30 am, this evening. Also present were BJP president Amit Shah and Union health minister JP Nadda.
The former prime minister is being looked after by a team of doctors from the nephrology, gastroenterology, pulmonology and cardiology departments.
