Proceedings in the Lok Sabha were disrupted on Thursday following strong protests by Congress members when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised the issue of land allocation to the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust in Haryana.

The issue, raised by the former BJP president, Rajnath Singh, forced two adjournments, one soon after the House assembled and another at noon till 2 p.m.

According to Mr. Singh, the trust, headed by the Congress president, had acquired the land by forcibly taking the signatures of farmers in Ullahawas village in Gurgaon district of Haryana.

Judicial probe

Demanding a judicial probe, Mr. Singh said he had toured 12 villages in the area, including Ullahawas, and saw how the land was being forcibly acquired from the farmers. He said the farmers were protesting against the acquisition.

Repeatedly interrupted by Congress members, who blamed the BJP for disrupting question hour, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said the reference to Haryana was not correct as it was a matter relating to a State.

In the ensuing melee, Deputy Speaker Karia Munda adjourned the House.

Earlier, when the House assembled, Mr. Singh moved for suspension of question hour to raise the issue of farmers' grievances.
